I am Huang Gonghuang. I have successively studied Zhang Daqian’s splash-ink painting, Zao Wou-Ki’s Eastern-style abstraction, Gerhard Richter’s brushless painting technique, and Jackson Pollock’s drip painting method. In recent years, I have integrated the painting styles of these masters, utilizing various painting tools and methods to transform the awareness in my consciousness into images in an abstract form; to depict a spiritual world that can be perceived but not presented figuratively.
Thought precedes action, and the consciousness of the mind can perceive things more essential than this material world; some of these perceptions are spiritual phenomena that transcend the material world.
Sometimes, these phenomena are just an inexplicable spontaneous thought. Sometimes, it is a long-held dream in the heart, wanting to build an abstract skyscraper reaching into the heavens. Sometimes, it is a bizarre dream. Sometimes, it is an imagination of beautiful things in the heart. Sometimes, it is the ripples in the heart when reading an abstract concept at a certain moment. Sometimes, it is the lingering impression in the heart after seeing the breathtaking beauty of nature; like a fleeting glimpse of light and shadow. Sometimes, it is the surge of emotions when revisiting an old place, reminiscing about childhood memories, and feeling emotionally moved by the scenery. Sometimes, it is the emotion generated unintentionally when listening to an uplifting and powerful song. Sometimes, it is just the sudden enlightenment experienced when focusing on something at the moment.
They are all spiritual phenomena perceived by consciousness, which I express in abstract forms and share with everyone.
Art is the intuitive perception of beautiful things by an individual’s soul, and this perception varies from person to person, unlike physical science, which seeks only one solution.
For me, innovation is an exploration of the unknown, rooted in the vague awareness of the unknown by consciousness. Some of these conscious perceptions are experiences that transcend things, so more than half of what happens during the process of innovation is beyond experience. I present these conscious or intuitive vague perceptions on the canvas through behavior and tools.
In response to environmental changes, species have changed their way of life to adapt to new living environments; first, the mind changes, and then behavior follows. Art is the same; it changes with the times. Whenever original new thinking and concepts are widely known to the masses through mass communication and gradually permeate every aspect and corner of society, they generate a collective subconscious among the people. This consciousness influences the thinking of contemporary creators, who often unconsciously create in the same context; expanding these original new thoughts and concepts to infinite possibilities, thus developing new artistic forms and becoming the contemporary style.
