Cho Ming-Shun | Biography
Cho Ming-Shun was born in 1968 in Yingge, New Taipei City, Taiwan. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Department of Crafts and Design at National Taiwan University of Arts in 2009. Raised in one of Taiwan’s most important ceramic centers, he has been deeply immersed in ceramic culture since childhood. In 1995, he established his own studio and has since devoted over three decades to full-time ceramic practice. In 2022, he was invited to become a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC) under UNESCO.
Working primarily with clay, Cho specializes in hand-built slab construction, through which he has developed a distinctive artistic language that integrates sculptural aesthetics with functional form. His work focuses on the generation of “interactivity” and “emotion,” emphasizing how touch, accumulated experience, and the passage of time in the use of objects foster an emotional bond between people and objects. This relationship further extends into empathy and connection among individuals. His forms often reveal an organic rhythm of growth, combining philosophical inquiry with refined craftsmanship to express a subtle yet vital contemporary ceramic language.
Throughout his career, Cho has received numerous prestigious awards both in Taiwan and internationally. These include the First Prize at the Taipei Ceramics Awards (Yingge Ceramics Museum) in 2007, Gold Awards at the Taiwan Golden Teapot Awards in 2012 and 2014, the Permanent Jury Exemption Award in 2016, and the Gold Award at the Korea International Ceramic Biennale in 2021. His works are widely collected by major institutions, including the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute, and the Gyeonggi Museum of Ceramic Art in Korea.
Cho’s exhibitions have been presented across Taiwan, China, Japan, Korea, and Europe. He has participated in numerous international invitational exhibitions and held multiple solo exhibitions. His artistic practice spans natural observation, bodily experience, and philosophical reflection, continually exploring the diverse possibilities of ceramics within a contemporary context.
In addition to his studio practice, Cho has long been engaged in teaching, public lectures, and international exchange. He has also been invited to serve as a juror for major ceramic competitions and exhibitions, actively contributing to the promotion and development of ceramic culture.
Amid the fast-changing pace of contemporary life, Cho’s work continues to engage with the essential themes of “emotion” and “humanity.” For him, ceramics is not merely the construction of form, but a medium that connects bodily perception, the spirit of objects, and human relationships—unfolding an ongoing dialogue on the meaning of existence, sensory experience, and the interconnectedness of life.
