This painting is a portrait of Attun Palalin (1919-1979). He is from the Amis tribe in Taiwan and known for being the last soldier who fought WWII for the Japanese army.
Throughout his lifetime, he has had several names: Attun Palalin (Amis), Teruo Nakamura (Japanese), 李光輝 (Chinese), depending on which government was in power at the time.
His portrait was painted first on the canvas and then washed down with large amounts of liquefied paint using repetitive gestures that evoke the process of destruction of self identity.
